Episode 78 – Baneful Bitchcraft

Listen on Podbean

Hello friends and thank you so much for tuning in today for episode 78 of the show Baneful Bitchcraft, the beginning of a series of episodes where I talk about the formerly taboo topic of hexes, curses, and magical acts to cause pain or misfortune in the lives of others. Today we’re going to talk a little bit about this type of magic, where it comes from, why it’s used, and finally, how to create a curse or hex for yourself.

  1. I’m descended from Italians. I grew up hearing, and giving, compliments or congratulations with a blessing attached.

“What a beautiful baby, God bless her!”
“You bought a house? Congrats and God bless!”
“Congrats on your new car! Drive it in good health!”

That’s literally the only kind of well-wishing I ever heard growing up, and I internalized it. Congratulations sound incomplete to me without the blessing tacked on.

I came to understand, as an adult, that this blessing was done to ward off any accidental malocchio being cast out of envy. Or, possibly, it’s warding off the jealousy of the gods who might then decide to lay the other person low. So I’ve been blocking curses all my life without even knowing it. I’d bet big money that my American-born Italian relatives are as unaware as I was of how this tradition came about.
